About

I’m a writer and a teacher from Kailua, Hawaiʻi, where I live with my wife, who is a veterinary nurse, and our cat and two dogs, who are currently unemployed. I write a regular column about Hawaiʻi for Honolulu Civil Beat, and from 2015-2021 I wrote a (mostly but not always) weekly column about fighting for Sherdog. I also write book reviews, essays, and occasionally short fiction and poetry.

My work has been published in Bamboo Ridge, The Classical, Dwell Magazine, FLUX Hawaiʻi, Hana Hou! Magazine, Harvard Review Online, Ka Wai Ola and Vice Sports, among others. My writing has been recognized by Longreads and Best American Sports Writing, and has won various awards from the Society of Professional Journalists and the Society for Features Journalism.

I have also lived in California, Canada and Korea.
